Cold this morning, but sunshine. Put on all our gear like yesterday, but by noon had long pants and outer jacket off. Beautiful ride. Only thing is, for the last 2 days we have been on a steady climb up. We were able to "cruise" at about 11 to 12.5 mph. today the grade got notched up and cruising speed reduced to 8 to 9....legs felt it at the end of the day.
BUT.....we got to cross the eastern continental divide, AND the Mason Dixon Line. Little bit of history that I didn't know was Mason Dixon were two English surveyors who were commissioned to survey the boundary between the Penn land and the Calvert land. Later this became Pennsylvania and Maryland. it was only later in history that this line became the demarcation between north and south. So as you will see by the pics, they do the line justice on the trail.
After the divide it was downhill. we went through the Savage tunnel, roughly 3000' then it was really downhill.....15-17mph without trying. Dirt trail and all. At the end of the day Cumberland MD and the end of the GAP (Greater Allegheny Passage) trail and start of the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) tow path. The tow path being along side a canal. we should be going through a 3000 foot tunnel that they dug for the canal. So enjoy the pics, and yes I got some colors to look at.....
River by the trail, and oh yea, FALL COLORS!!!!!
Big long bridge, really cool
Made it to Meyersville train station. Neat museum. Barb has memories of having her picture in the paper of her having her tongue under the spigot tapped into the maple sugar tree. SURPRIZE SURPRIZE....
Where we been and where we be going....
These pics account for the slow climb up and the fast decent
Vistas shortly after the tunnel
AND THE LINE!!!!!
back to the traill
Frostburg is a town above the trail. a bike path makes lots of switch backs to the top. We chose not to visit. Supposed to be a cool RR turntable at the top for a tourist train...still didn't go. But need hair sculptures.
went all out and got a hotel with hot tub, first on the trip. well hopefully we will have good pics of the canal. Adios!!!!!
